Official Student Book Guide 2008

Welcome to Student Book Online!

www.studentbook.org is a joint venture between Subtv and the authors of the hegemonic school-leavers guide to university - The Student Book - published by Trotman. The 29th edition has been updated exclusively for this website to help sixth formers applying this autumn for courses starting in 2009.

The Student Book has a huge readership and offers an entirely independent guide to all British universities exposing the nitty gritty details that are vital when choosing where to study. This online version offers the same invaluable information with a powerful search facility that enables you to pin-point the information that is important to you.

This site includes over 250 universities and colleges which feature in the print version of the book, covering vast amounts of detail including sections written by real students giving you the inside track on what university life is really like. From choosing a university to surviving your first year both the book and this site covers all the information you need.

Registering is free and will allow you to create a shortlist of universities you are interested in, and the opportunity to download sections of the book in PDF format.

What to do this month

  • Starting your course this year?

Clearing - you can still enter clearing in early September but the number of places gets smaller every day.

If you have already got a place, sort out your accommodation, make sure you know where your money is coming from, start making your practical arrangements for the start of term (get stationery, passport photos, meningitis vaccination, find your exam certificates etc).

Make sure you have arrangements with your family for any money they are due to pay you.

If you qualified for a full Maintenance Grant (Assembly Learning Grant in Wales, Bursary in Scotland), you should qualify for extra help from your university. Find out if any of this is payable before the start of your course.

    Applying this year?

    Complete your on-line UCAS form.

    Draft your personal statement.

    Finalise your shortlist.

Music applications: if you are applying to any conservatoires through CUKAS, get your application in now (you will be classed as a late application after 1 October).
