London Metropolitan University has been fined £5.9 million by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The fine has been imposed because the university over-recruited UK undergraduates this year. This sum is twice as large as any fine imposed last year and reflects the fact that London Met recruited 1500 more students than it should have done. In this it is not alone, says the Vice Chancellor, many English universities over-recruited in the rush for places to beat the hike in tuition fees.
