The UCAS clearing system is to be scrapped under proposals announced by UCAS today. Clearing currently matches about 50,000 university applicants who have not got get a university place − usually because their A-level results do not match the offers they have received from universities. UCAS proposes to replace Clearing with a new system next year, which it hopes will be fairer and more transparent. There will be a greater gap than at present between A-level results being published and the unfilled university places being allocated, and a structured process with clearer information about available options.
