As fees go up, so applications from UK students have gone down. UCAS figures show that overall applications to higher education institutions from UK-based students have fallen by 8.7% for the next academic year – 2012/13. This is when the new tuition fees of up to £9000 pa come into force. The impact of the new fees has been most dramatic for England's universities, which saw a fall of 9.9%. In contrast the fall in applications in Scotland was only 1.5%. In Wales the fall was 1.9% and in Northern Ireland 4%.
