3 years; others 1−4 years. All courses offered full or part time.
Purely a theological college, primarily training people for Christian ministry. Although Anglican, increasing numbers are from other denominations and independent churches. For some, a qualification in theological and pastoral studies is an end in itself. Set in 60 acres of parkland and woods, housed in a Georgian mansion with a new academic centre nearby; expanding library (access 24/7) and good bookshop. Excellent relationships with staff (first name basis). Students are represented on all committees and involved in interviewing new staff. Prayer and worship start each day. All students are in fellowship groups. Long-standing links, and possible exchanges, with colleges in Africa and Australia (students fundraise for a college in Uganda). College courses include: biblical studies, doctrine, ethics, sociology, counselling, youth and children’s work, communication/preaching, church history, apologetics, other religions, biblical languages. Teaching styles vary (seminars, lectures, workshops, tutorials, placements in college missions, chaplaincy etc); assessments by coursework and/or exam. London easily accessible, 30 minutes on tube from station one mile away. Families very well catered for: green spaces and playground equipment for children to play, playgroup, babysitting rota. Evening programme for spouses who may also attend lectures free or take the course at half price.
Housing: Singles usually in study bedrooms in main building; many married couples in college-owned houses and flats on campus. Individual studies available. All on-campus accommodation on college network (and so internet). Eats: Food on campus good and cheap (Monday to Friday). Lots of variety locally. Drink: No bar. Local pubs OK (especially those in Hertfordshire countryside, few miles north). Nightlife: TV/video room, table tennis, snooker, table football, tennis/basketball courts, football (college team), cricket, croquet! Classical music programme, college drama productions, may ball, Christmas parties, bonfire night, parties etc. Sports: Swimming (1 mile), squash (next to college), golf. Saracens RFC is opposite college entrance. Travel: Expenses reimbursed for placements. Financial help: Various hardship funds. In cases of real need the college community will try to meet the need itself. Jobs: Various part-time and vacation work available. Informal name: Oak Hill (former students known as Old Oaks). Best features: Great courses and grounds, fantastic people, sense of community (visitors often comment on the happy and friendly atmosphere). And worst: Can be quite ‘academic’.
Sir Cliff Richard, John Pantry, various bishops and Anglican big-wigs! Rt Rev George Carey (former Archbishop of Canterbury) was a tutor.
